Class of 1949 Celebrates 50th Reunion

THE CHATHAMS -- Chatham High School Class of 1949 Senior Class Officers, Ed Heft, President; Karol "Ditter" Hammer, Secretary; and Hilda "Scotty" Beck Sorensen, Treasurer, got together with their former teachers, Nevin Brown (Math), Dorothyjean Jamieson (Business), Howard Hemmerly (Math), and Alba deRogatis Quaresimo (Spanish) at the 50th Reunion of the class held recently at the Jersey shore. drlno1a.jpg (110000)

They were among sixty-five classmates, spouses, and guests who participated in the three day event, which began with a welcome gathering at the Old Mill Inn in Spring Lake Heights on Wednesday, September 22, 1999. Golfers enjoyed a round of golf at The Old Orchard Country Club Thursday morning.
The gala event was the 50th Anniversary celebration at the Breakers Hotel, Spring Lake. A cocktail party on the Hotel veranda overlooking the ocean was followed by a banquet in the dining room. A special treat was provided by noted entertainer Jimmy Byrne with his rich variety of music and songs.
Classmate Tom Kennedy demonstrated his hobby of kite flying on the beach Friday morning before participants again gathered for a special luncheon at Rod's Olde Irish Tavern in Sea Girt where the class caught up on the lives of some who could not attend the reunion and were also provided more nostalgia moments through videotape segments from former reunions, assembled by Arnie Goetchius, another member of the class. Arrangements for the events at the Breakers, Rod's and The Old Orchard were handled by classmate Harry Goett.

The thirty-nine classmates in attendance came from as far away as the states of Washington and Oregon. One classmate and his wife in the flooded area of North Carolina couldn't get out by their usual land route but left home at 2:00 am by ferry and arrived on time to the delight of their classmates who were concerned.

Three, all of whom serve on the class reunion committee of eleven, still live in Chatham: Jim Pappas, who emceed the events, Mary "Chickie" Tyrone Tracy, and Doris Lissaman, Class Coordinator.
Lissaman said that the Class of '49 is a great reunion class. The committee meets regularly between reunions inviting any classmates who wish to attend to do so. Also yearly newsletters keep classmates informed of news regarding the class. The enthusiasm of this year's attendees was evident as everyone enjoyed spectacularly beautiful weather and a chance to relive happy moments spent at the Jersey shore during high school years. As many of the class attended Great Reunion '97 in Chatham, they welcomed a visit to the Spring Lake area.

For all classmates, including those who couldn’t attend, pictures of the event will be shown on the Chatham High School Reunions web site (http://www.chsreunions.com) . This site also has articles about alumni in the news and information about class reunions being held in 1999 and 2000 for the classes of 1950, 1953, 1955, 1956, 1959, 1974, 1979, 1980, 1989, 1990 and 1994.
