Matthew P. Foley Memorial Scholarship

Matthew P. Foley, an English teacher and coach in the Chatham school districts for nearly five decades, passed away on April 4, 2002. Matt was a man who profoundly affected the lives of literally thousands of students, and he was a friend and colleague to many Chatham teachers and residents alike.

Shortly after his death, a group comprised of Matt's family, colleagues, and former students expressed their desired to establish a scholarship to honor this man who so generously gave of himself while instilling his love of literature and the written word to his students.

The Matthew P. Foley Memorial Scholarship, which will be awarded at the High School Commencement Exercises in June,
2003, is to be given to a deserving scholar-athlete who intends to pursue a degree in education. A committee of Chatham High School teachers will select three candidates from which the recipient will be determined.

We are asking those of you knew and admired Matt to contribute to the scholarship fund. For those of you who did not have
the pleasure of knowing Matt, your recognition of Matt's career through your contribution would bring honor to a man who should serve as a model for all educators.

Whit Ranger, former CHS English teacher and close friend of Mr. Foley, has taken the lead in establishing this new scholarship opportunity. If you have any questions regarding the fund, please feel free to contact him at 908-647-5845, or via e-mail at . Checks may be made payable to the Matthew P. Foley Scholarship Fund, and sent to:

Your generosity in Matt's memory will be greatly appreciated.

Thanking you in advance and in Matt's memory -

Fara Courtney, CHS(b) ' 75
