Billy Walsh '94 Selected For US National Soccer Team

New York/New Jersey Metro-Stars midfielder Billy Walsh (CHS '94) was recently selected to compete on the U.S. National team. He joined the squad for a match against Jamaica on September 8. This was his first appearance with a national team since he played with the under-23 squad at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. He was Named the New York/New Jersey Metro-Stars most valuable player. He was also recognized by his teammates with the Players' Player Award. Walsh is a midfielder. He scored four goals in 30 games.

Since his appearance on that team, Walsh, a college standout at Virginia and Rutgers, was selected by the MetroStars in the 1998 MLS college draft. He has been a starter most of this season, stepping in as captain over the past month.

In June Walsh was approved by the Chatham Board of Education as coach of the high school soccer team replacing his former coach, Ken Cherry. Last year he served as a volunteer coach.
